In 1999, when the opportunity arose to work as a fly fishing guide in Alaska, I moved to Juneau without hesitation. For the next 5 summers I worked for a local outfitter, flying to the remote waters of the Southeast mainland, Chilkat Peninsula, and Admiralty & Chichagof Islands, learning as much as I could on the job. It was a both a privilege and an adventure to do so.
In 2002, I met my wife, and current Quality Control Officer of everything I do, Colleen. I went back to school, got a masters degree, and started my on-going (17-year) career as a middle school teacher. While I missed the frequent flyouts and adventure of guiding, the seasonal nature of teaching has allowed me to continue fishing in some fine and far-off places. Steelhead in the big rivers of British Columbia, bonefish on the flats of the Bahamas and Mexico, salmon (or the temptation of salmon) in Scotland, and big trout in the sockeye-filled streams of Bristol Bay, have both humbled and inspired me over the last 2 decades and counting.
Ironically, these new experiences in exotic locations have only increased my appreciation of the fishing Juneau has to offer. With good timing and a little effort, you can find spectacular scenery, fun fishing, abundant wildlife, and even some solitude. What better way to experience the intricacies of Southeast Alaska than to get on the water, or to walk a beach or to wade a shoreline in search of fish?
Tidewater Fly Fishing is my attempt to share with you an experience that can't be replicated in a large group tour - a day of guided fishing suited to your needs and abilities, with everything you need to have a memorable Southeast Alaska experience.
