Full Day or Partial Day – What’s the Difference?

At Tidewater Fly Fishing, we offer two different trips; a Partial Day trip of up to 5 hours, and a Full Day trip of up to 8 hours.  We frequently receive inquiries asking, "Which trip is right for me?" Below is a comparison of some trip-specific details to help guide your decision making.

Partial Day Trips (up to 5 hours):

These 5 hour trips were designed with two types of clients in mind - the cruise ship passenger and the local resident. For the cruise ship passenger, the shorter duration of the partial day trip allows time to fish a decent amount of time while probably still having time to explore the downtown, to grab a beverage in town, or to sample some local food before departing.

For the local resident looking to learn to fly fish or improve their tactics, 5 hours is a good amount of time to get some casting instruction, to fish a few different locations, and to learn about the different techniques and tackle used throughout the season. There's plenty of fishing to be had without traveling too far from Juneau, and Gastineau Channel has the best fishing in town at certain times of the year.

In summary, a partial day trip is right if you:

  • Are visiting for a fairly short time and really want to go fishing.
  • Have a decent amount of time and want to sample Juneau's restaurants, gifts shops, historic downtown after fishing.
  • Want a casting lesson or techniques to improve your success, often on short notice or flexibly planned around your busy schedule or specific fishing interests.

Full Day Trips (up to 8 hours):

The full day trip was also designed with two types of clients in mind - the diehard angler, and the adventurous traveler. For the experienced fly fishers who want to make the most of their opportunities in Alaska, a full day allows you to target multiple species across a variety of water types throughout the day, to fish in locations that receive less pressure, and to experience a wider variety of scenery throughout the day.

For the adventurous traveler with more time, a full day allows you to escape the crowds of busy cruise ship port, to go for a quiet hike through a pristine forest, and a chance to see more wildlife or feel the tug of a trout or salmon at the end of your line, regardless of experience .

In summary, you should choose a full day trip if you:

  • Love to fly fish and want the best opportunity to catch a variety of fish.
  • Appreciate a nice hike through the forest or a scenic picnic lunch more than shopping and dining in town.
  • Want to see a variety of terrain, rivers, and shorelines while learning to fly fish, trying some new techniques, or simply immersing yourself in the Tongass National Forest with a fly rod in hand.
